But ask a die-hard from the “dookie” album era, and I’m another late-to-the-party poser. That’s the thing about fandom—when your favorite band “matures,” (to some: “sells out”) it never hits quite the same.

If you’re wondering what this has to do with AI—last Friday, OpenAI dropped GPT-5, and suddenly, thousands of users felt like their band had sold out, gone corporate, lost their soul, man… 

More than that even, they felt they’d lost a friend. The Reddit eulogies rolled in: the “chatty quirky companion” had been replaced by an “overworked secretary.” It’s more than nostalgia—it’s a case study in how product strategy, human psychology, and the accelerating pace of AI collide.
